What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist studied for at least 5 years to obtain the first degree and a master’s degree or continuing professional training in psychology and later in a form of applied psychology. Psychologists are trained in a number of different therapeutic approaches and also in researching and evaluating the results of psychological treatment. This allows them to take a scientific and informed approach to mental and emotional difficulties. Psychologists also prepare a number of therapeutic approaches which allow them to adapt their approach to the individual, rather than trying to fit the individual into an approach. This allows a greater flexibility and better fit for the different needs of different clients.

A psychiatrist is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry. This means that a psychiatrist can rule out the psysical cause of your difficulties and order tests and prescribe medication. This is something that only doctors can do. Some psychatrists also received specialized training in psychotherapy which puts them in a unique position to be able to understand both the body and the mind and how to work flexibly between prescribing medication and psychological therapy.

Do I need to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist?

Depending on the nature and severity of the difficulties you are facing, you may need to consult a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or both. Psychologists are experts in treating problems through a certain therapeutic method, while psychiatrists have prevalent expertise in managing mental disorders through medication. If you are not sure who you should book an appointment with, we can discuss different options with you and we’ll give you more information on what might be best for your current needs.

What happens at my first meeting?

During your first meeting you will discuss in detail why you are requesting assistance and about your current difficulties. You can also begin a process of psychological assesment and record a detailed history so that you can understand it in the context of individual life and experiences. This will allow us to develop a psychological statement of your problems and a personalized approach strategy. By the end of your evaluation, which usually takes one or two meetings, we will make a recommendation on what therapeutic approach might be useful for your difficulties and we will agree on an initial number of sessions if you want to start a therapy process. Sometimes, based on the information you provide us during the initial contact, we may recommend that you consult other specialists who may be able to help you.
